Patrick Leon van der Vyver is a Muslim revert with Christian roots. He reverted privately near the end of 2025 and took his public Shahada at Panorama Masjid (Masjid Al Tuba) at the beginning of 2026. He still actively attends revert classes there.
His journey to Islam was not sudden. After years of research, prayer and contemplation — and moments of doubt caused by false information — he eventually came to a place where the truth was clear: Islam is the natural continuation of the same message he had been searching for.
Part of Patrick's path came from studying the Bible for himself. The more he read, researched and prayed about Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him), the less what he found aligned with mainstream Christianity. Ironically, becoming a more educated Christian is what led him to Islam.
When you really have a proper conversation, with sincere prayer, an open heart and an open mind, you will understand that Islam really is the truth — and that there are real misunderstandings about Jesus and God outside of Islam. Even within Islam there are slight differences in belief. Islam is not monolithic... but of course, Allahu Alam. Only God knows best.
Patrick's life goal is to bring people closer to Allah, whatever stage they are at. He does not force anyone into a specific path, because if a person's intention is sincere, Allah will guide them. He also wants to reduce false information about Islam, especially among people from Christian backgrounds who have the same questions he once did, and to stand against the divisions that weaken the Ummah.
Uniting hearts. Strengthening faith. Building a better community. The foundation that guides Durbanville Islamic Society, the founding community behind Cape Muslim Connect.

Daily prayers and spiritual connection in a tranquil environment.

Nurturing minds and hearts through our Madrasah and regular classes.

Stronger together — supporting each other through weekly gatherings.

Making a positive difference through charitable initiatives and outreach.
The Durbanville Islamic Society (DIS) was established in 2013 to serve the Muslim community of Durbanville and surrounding areas. From 28 Tambotie Crescent, Wellway Park East, we continue to grow together in faith and unity — beginning with the Taraweeh gatherings hosted in 2011–2012 at the home of the late Liaqat Razzak (Al-Marhoom) in Vierlanden.
To establish an Islamic value based DIS which supports the needs of the community by promoting social and community cohesion and spiritual upliftment guided by Al Qur'an and As-Sunnah, to ultimately obtain the pleasure of Allah SWT.
To be the leading Islamic society in the Western Cape by 2035.
